The Meaning Of The Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice usually occurs on the dates of December 21st or 22nd (in the Northern Hemisphere) when the Sun reaches it's farthest elliptical point away from Earth. In the wheel of the year, the Winter Solstice is the shortest day and longest night while the North and South poles of planet Earth experience full hours of darkness. At this time, the Sun now sits directly over the the Tropic of Capricorn marking the beginning of Winter.

The meaning of The Winter Solstice is to integrate the duality of our darkness and light. Now is the time to strengthen the connection to our inner world so that we can step into the world with a greater sense of who we are. To align yourself with your highest potential you must create deep roots so that your foundation becomes unshakable. Nourish your roots in the dark so that you may flourish in the light of the Sun.

Within the earth-based religions of our ancestors The Winter Solstice was a time to honor the Sun (the archetype of the masculine) in order to call it back to it's full strength once more. The sun was symbolically being reborn again.

The Feminine Energy Of The Winter Season

The feminine energy of Winter creates the space for receptivity, introspection and a more intuitive state of being. We are now able to create space to allow for new opportunities to flow in to our lives naturally while we rest with nature during this cycle in the wheel of the year. There is an internal journeying to be cultivated within us as we make plans to manifest in the material world. Enjoyment of material comforts should be both welcomed and celebrated, as well.

The Winter season represents the distance from masculine archetypes of striving forward and taking action to a more feminine energy. However, the duality of the Masculine and the Feminine exist within both of these energies and does not represent a scale but instead a complete image.
