The Calling On My Spirit

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

In this article I discuss my journey to becoming a Reiki healer and rediscovering my path as a lightworker to fulfill my soul's mission on planet Earth.

There have been few moments in my life where I can remember a pulling forth, by some invisible force, toward a feeling so strong. My child self felt it as she attempted to control of the forces of the wind in her backyard and wrote rudimentary poems under the twilight of a full moon. The budding artist in me felt it when she picked up a film camera for the first time. I’ve always been what you call a "free spirit".

I would spend my formative years creating, imagining and trying to capture the human experience as best as I could. Because, quite simply, this is what mattered most to me - the interconnectedness of our shared human experience and the emotional connection that a crowd of people could all share together. I had all of the cliche dreams of Hollywood red carpets, fame and fortune but when this pulling forth moved me toward the desire for a different and maybe even higher calling I didn't know how not to answer.

"I’ve always been what you call a free spirit."

But there was a catch. For the first time ever I didn't have a clear picture of what it was - this higher calling. I had just dropped out of the acclaimed Pratt Institute and began to fall in and out of bad internships and low paying jobs. My struggles with mental health intensified at this time. I thought about learning how to teach yoga and pondered opening an etsy shop selling herbal blends. Because this was what I spent my all of my free time doing anyway and it made me feel better. I knew that I wanted to create a living doing something that was rooted in my spiritual practice. And then, by the grace of God, I found Reiki.

Mikao Usui, the creator of the Usui Tibetan Reiki Ryoho I now practice, found himself on a similar mission. At the turn of the 20th century, after years of carrying out civic duties and pursuing a career in journalism, Mikao Usui would begin the search of an ultimate life state. Here purpose, peace and fulfillment of one’s destiny could be found. In Japan, there is a specific name for this life state called An-Shin Ritsu-Me (pronounced on-sheen ditsu-may).

Usui Sensei discovered that there was a specific path to this life state through Zazen meditation. So, as an example of his devotion to attaining this life state he found himself as an ascetic on the famous Mount Kurama (as instructed by his Zen master). After a month of fasting and purportedly sitting under the flow of a waterfall Mikao Usui was suddenly struck by a powerful source of light! In a fit of excitement to tell his master of the event he stumbled down the mountain stubbing his toe on the way down. Overwrought, Usui Sensei grabbed his stubbed toe and, by surprise, realized he had the power to heal the pain. Energy flowed from his hands, through his fingertips and the pain in his stubbed toe had instantly went away. I know - the stuff of miracles, right?

"And then, by the grace of God, I found Reiki."

Luckily for me, I just had to find my local reiki certification course! During my course I too experienced a very palpable feeling of an enlightenment, of excitement and renewed energy and strength. This renewed sense of purpose would lead me to places and experiences and to people to which I seemed naturally guided. Even to you.
