The Autumn Equinox means that Fall season has officially begun! Let's talk about the metaphysical energies of "Spooky Season" as the Wheel of the Year turns once again.

What is the Autumn Equinox?

The Autumn Equinox occurs in the the third week of September marking the start of the season of Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. The hours of day and night are equal due to the Sun's position directly above the equator now in the astrological sign of Libra (Western Tropical).

In the wheel of the year Fall season represents a time of abundant harvest and welcomed endings. We have cultivated the land, in a sense, to get us through the coming months. We have appreciation for what we have experienced, the goals we have achieved and for what we have gained in the process. As we enter a period of rest we can now make time for a deeper internal journey.

Metaphysics, Mystery and Magic

The astrological influence of Fall, and colloquially "Spooky Season", is almost impossible to ignore! The planetary influences of the Morning and Evening Star, Venus, God of The Underworld, Pluto, and greater benefic, Jupiter take a stronger hold over the collective. We are reveling in the gaiety of night and celebrating spirits of the dead; that of our ancestors who are here to guide us through the darkness and into the light.

The duality of human consciousness is embraced. However, The Fall Equinox reminds us that if don't remain a steady balance we could easily slip too far in the wrong direction thus allowing darkness to consume us. Great wisdom is to be gained through the rich experiences that different aspects of human life can teach us.

How To Celebrate The Autumn Equinox

  1. Decorate your home to honor the Fall season with the colors of the season; reds, oranges, yellows and browns. Add a natural aesthetic to your home decorations by exploring your neighborhood park. This is an opportune time for picking pinecones and maybe even asking the straw if it would like to be picked, as well. Then, of course, picking pumpkins and apples at your local farm is a great way to celebrate The Autumn Equinox and add the essence of Fall season to your home.

  2. Honor the darkness. Claim this aspect of polarity as a part of you by perhaps lighting a candle to honor your ancestors. Adding a photo or a personal item of the person who has passed can help to empower this part of you. Creating a sacred space dedicated just to them can aid you in your pathwork. You can ask this particular ancestor for protection or to even help heal you to purge your deepest emotions.

  3. Eat some seasonal grub. Look up your favorite Fall recipes online and then take a trip to your local farmer's market to ensure all of your produce are in season. This my personal favorite way to celebrate the turning of the Wheel Of The Year. You could even invite over some of your favorite people and host a feast!

  4. Burn the scents of the season. Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Rose, Sage, Ylang Ylang and Orange Blossom are all perfect scents for the celebration of the start of Autumn. They could also help to raise your awareness to the planetary influences that rule over the season.
